Indian Private Operator Sub Base Overtakes Public Carriers
August 19, 2005
According to TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India), private operators had 53.76 million subscribers by the end of July 2005, while the two public sector companies had 53.24 million, about 50% of the total 107 million subscriber market. The increase of the market share is mainly due to the growth of mobile usage in which private operators accounted for 47.33 million mobile users but state-owned companies only had only 12.5 million mobile users. On fixed line, however, the public sector companies, whose capital comprises about 65% of the telecom sector, continue to rule the market.
